Transmission fluid??

Hi everyone,
I purchased a 98 Cabrio Convertible in January. I thought I was having trouble with my transmission, but after having it checked out my mechanic says it's fine. The thing that confuses me is I was told the transmission fluid was "lifetime" and never needs to be changed. Is this true? Sounds really wierd to me...

Also there appears to be no way to check it or the level of the fluid. What gives???

i found it funny to heather ...but yeah SUPPOSEDLY the tranny fluid and ur fuel filter should be lifetime kinda wierd and spooky GO VW
