power door-lock buttons dead

2001, Cabrio convertible.
I've had it detailed by the same car wash for years. This last time around I noticed the power doorlock buttons BOTH were dead, a few days after the carwash. I contacted them but since a few days had passed, and we had a lot of rain the night before, they did not claim responsibility. I could keep after them, but I need to diagnose/estimate the cost first.

I assumed their cleaning fluids got in the switch, but BOTH at the same time? Checked the doorlock fuse - okay.

Doors still lock/unlock with the remote. My dealership looked at it and said to dig further into the electrical problem, take doors apart, etc, will have to charge me hourly labor, and didn't know how far the problem will go.

I took the car and I'm hoping to figure out myself. When driving through unsafe areas of the city I want to be able to lock the doors! If I push the knob down manually, I can't get it back up later. Can't open the doors. have top use the remote from inside the car or unlock the doors.

Any ideas? Similar stories?

Thanks
