Default Leaky Cabrio

My 02 Cabrio leaks when it rains. The water builds up in the rear pasenger area (mostly the drivers' side). I'm lookign for suggestions as to where I can buy replacement (roof) weather seals. Of course I can get the material at the local dealer, but I looking for a less expensive source. Also, any advise as to how to treplace the seals would be appreciated.
Thanks ...Alan '02

You might wanna try going to a few parts stores in your area and asking around for local non-dealer VW parts suppliers. I wouldn't go o a dealer either, they will charge you up the wazoooo....usually if you can find a local VW parts store, they will be able to tell you the best way to replace the seals.

try to consult a trusted mechanic.. or you can check your local parts stores. there are lots of parts and Volkswagen accessories available, you will not have difficulties finding one.

Same problem with my wife's 00. I thought it was coming from the bottom, but couldn't find any problems after tearing the interior appart. I've also checked all seals and they are all good...can't figure out where it's coming from.

Default '98 Jetta having same issues

I don't have a Cab but my '98 Jetta is having the same issue. Whenever it rains or it snows; water just gets into the rear compartment concentrated on the driver side. I've checked the seals in the door, and the rear glass, it all seems intact, I think it was coming in from the rear seat area, because their was water tracks along the back seat groove where it locks upright. I don't want the back of my car turning into a petri dish. Any ideas?

Wondering if the leaks can be contained if the raggtop is resealed? I have a 99 Cabrio. A friend has a Saab convertable and he said his leaks and that he needs to have it resealed with a sealant. I've looked online for sealant. I have found 2 and am wondering if anyone has any idea as to which I should purchase? Car Care Products / Nanolex / Exterior / Soft Top Care / Convertible Top Sealant
RaggTopp Fabric Protectant
Thanks for any help!

I know this is an old thread, but I have a little insight on the possible leak issue on a Cabrio.

Having changed out the top, I know more about the sealing and drainage system.

I feel the most unlikely place for a leak would be under the rear window, where the canvas top attaches to the car. I say this because the CABIO, (mine is a 99) has an actual trough to catch any water that gets by the seals. This water will end up going to vinyl which is cupped to divert the water to drains, under the rear windows just next or slightly behind the rear seat back sides. IF THIS VINYL HAS BEEN TAMPERED WITH OR MOVED, IT WILL SEND WATER INTO THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT.

If your window seals are leaking, you will see where it had streamed down the glass. Or you can put some baby power on the glass before a storm which will show the water marks when it rains. Having replaced the top, I got to know the sealing system more than I ever would have imagined and the rubber seals for the windows are very well constructed and unless there is a misaligned fit, would be difficult to allow leakage. But, strange things do happen.

Once you find the source, you can make changes or adjustments to attempt to stop the leaks. Your door seals should be checked as well. The system is rather easy to check, the Cabrio Drain flaps ( next to the rear passenger seat backs) are some what difficult to see to check but it can be done.

I do suggest that you make sure your window rubber seals are in their holders properly. If they are not seated properly, they will leak. You can pull them out somewhat easily but they ONLY GO BACK IN ONE WAY. You have to use a lube or soap and slide them in from the end of the holder. You won't be able to just press them in place. Also, they only slip in from one end so pay attention which end slips in first.

Hope my comments may have been helpful.. I know how it can really be irritating when a leak occurs.

Good luck.
