Default Heat issue

Hello, I am new to the vw seen. I just picked up a pretty chery 1988 stock cabriolet convert. Well only issue is the heat. It sometimes blows hot air and sometimes does not and it doesn't seem to really blow like it should. My heat gauge goes past the halt way mark and then goes back down. Idk what to think of it? Any help would be apreciated.

First job is check the thermostat is working correctly or replace it.

Then you need to check the temperature recorded by the ecu with VAG-COM\VCDS and scan for any error codes and post them.
