5 Speed problems

Im a vw newby,..acquired this 99 cabrio with issues, (God hates a coward),.. So the story goes; 1999 Cabrio 2.0 5sp man, the PO claims he attempted a tanny oil change, but put the fluid back in the wrong hole (???),.. then started it and made it to the end of the driveway and it started making a noise, so he shut it down and left it,... Fast forward to now,... I get the car and before trying to start it, I pull the 17mm allen drain plug, (that appeared to have never been removed) and old looking fluid comes out,(almost 2 qts)....along with what look like 4 chewed up roller bearings. Ill try an post pics.
So, aside from me most likely needing a trans, would anyone care to try and figure out what happened here. There is a smaller allen head on the bottom that looks like it may have been removes (little seapage near it).
Also, what years, models, 5sp tranny's will fit this 99 cabrio ? (its the one with the green end bell)
thank you

I don't see how you can put the oil back in the wrong hole and on the side of the gearbox, don't you have a manual?

Post moved to correct section. ;)

Yea baffles me too,...and like i said it didnt appear that the drain plug was ever removed. So, any idea what those 4 pcs are?... Is this tranny toast ?
