4th gear problems 86 vw cabrio
 

When I shift into fourth my car just shoots up the rpms and doesn't go. Every other gear is fine. Does this mean I have to replace or rebuild the tranny or is there something else wrong with it? (gear box)(synchronizing)? If u can help please post
