2001 Cabrio GLX A/C Compressor Probs
Hello all - need a little help if I may. My daughter has a 2001 Cabrio GLX. The a/c compressor has locked up. She goes to Georgia Southern University, about 300 miles from home. My brother and I paid a visit this past Sunday and diagnosed the problem but the shops in the area want a fortune to install a new unit. The question is - on our next visit - install the new A/C compressor and not charge it until we get it back home?
With no Freon in the unit - would it damaged it on the ride back?
If I can get it home - my local guy can service it and not charge an arm and a leg.

Welcome to the forum. 
I would probably damage the new compressor because the lubricating oil is in the Freon.
