Default 2000 Cabrio starting system

Does any one have an electrical of the 2000 Cabrio starting system and is there any thing like a relay or fuse between the ignition switch and the starter solenoid? The key wont start the car but I can jumper the starter solenoid to the bat and start the car that way with the ignition key in the on (run) position

The electronic schematics in my Haynes manual sucks (so no promises), but it shows the ignition wired from the ignition switch through the fuel pump relay to the starter motor. The relay switches are above the fuses in the drive wheel well above and behind the brake and clutch pedals. It should have 167 stamped on the back.

Could the ignition switch be bad?

The car runs when I jumper the starter solenoid to the battery when the key is in the ignition and in the run position, so that leaves the fuel pump relay out. You are right it is probably the ignition switch Id like to be sure before I replace it. what I need to know is if there is anything between the ignition switch and the starter solenoid and what wires to look at on the ignition switch. Also are Bentley good manuals are they well detailed in wiring and other things? Chilton manuals are useless.

Thanks for your information though and I think your right that it is the ignition switch I just want to prove it to myself.

My diagram shows a black wire from the ignition switch to the fuel pump relay, and a red/black wire from the relay splitting back to the ignition switch in one direction and to the starter motor in the other. If you have an 2.0L engine w/ automatic transmission the red/black wire is routed through starter inhibitor before it gets to the starter. In a 2.0L manual, or 1.8L turbo there is no inhibitor. (I don't think the Cabrio has a 1.8L turbo so that must be for one of the other VWs covered by this manual. That's one reason why it sucks)

"Also are Bentley good manuals are they well detailed in wiring and other things?"

I would think it would have to be but wouldn't know for sure.
