1999 ABS light wont go off

The ABS light in my cabrio wont go off, the trouble I'm running into is the mechanic we went to is saying the ABS light is causing his code reader to not connect.

I don't understand the correlation, is this something people have dealt with? I wanted to get my codes read so I could solve an over heating problem/check for other issues.

I'm not sure where to go from here. I'm sure I can start replacing fuses, and sensors and parts but I don't see how that would affect being able to read codes.

Ideas?

Are you using VAG-COM\VCDS or a cheap generic scanner? Check all connections on the DTC socket.

It was a mechanic that couldn't read it, it hooked up to a computer. I'll take a good look at the wires today. I read also it could be a K line in an aftermarket radio causing it to not read ?

Same here, 99' cabrio, My abs and Brake light are both on. Previous owner took it in and had it checked it out, nothing wrong with brakes, was told it may be electrical in the panel. The brake light shuts off time to time but majority is on, and the ABS light is on all the time. Took the Car in to Meineke to have the oil changed, after i purchased it. Along with other things to repair, they mentioned flushing the brake fluid, because it was discolored. Not sure if that would fix it, but it may help the issue. i'm considering it, but right now i really don't care about the lights being on

Just updating on what we did to get this to turn off, I'm not sure WHICH thing solved the issue, but everything was rusted to hell so we replaced:

Front & Rear Brakes
Front & Rear Calipers
Front & Rear Speed Sensors
Rear Wheel Bearings
Emergency Brake Cables & Guide Tubes
New Brake Fluid

whew~
