VW Engine identification

4 Attachment(s)
Hi All - new to the forum and am looking for any assistance. I recently purchased a 1968 Beetle for my daughter and the seller gave me an engine that was out of the car and partially torn down. I am looking to buy parts and am trying to identify the engine as I don't think it was original to the car. Everywhere online says to get the numbers under the generator mount but on this engine there are no casting numbers. Any other way to find out or location of the numbers? (I don't really want to pull the heads and measure the bore and stroke).

I pulled the oil cooler off (broken) and the studs are tons smaller than the case holes and someone had installed it with the tapered green oil seals (large case holes small oil cooler holes). Possibly a newer engine with an older cooler? I know its a single port 4 cyl and that's about it!

Any knowledge, thoughts, or ideas regarding this topic would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

That's the thing, I dont know. When I Googled how to identify VW engines, the numbers that everyone talks about are not there. See photo 1.

Based on other Google searches (by the intake mounting flange photos) I don't think it's the older, smaller engines.

just wondering if anyone had run across an enine with no ID numbers and if there is another way to ID.
