Timing Belt Instructions???
One of my customers has a '04 Beetle with the 20 valve turbo engine in it. Is the timing belt job a DIY thing or is it to hard to do in the drive way under the tree?
|
Its a pity it isn't a TDI I could give you full instructions. The petrol version will take longer to do.

Is there a way to tell if this is a turbo car from the VIN? When I put the VIN in AutoCheck it didn't mention turbo but I'm pretty sure I seen TURBO on the engine cover. Unless someone changed the cover. :?

It doesn't really matter if its turbo or not what I need is the engine code which you can find from:

There was no service book in the glove compartment. I guess I'll get if from the tb cover.

Called VW of USA and they said it is turbo.
Did a YouTube search and found a video on the job. Dude didn't seem to have ever done it before, just took a stab at it. Got it done with a little learning. I just don't like rolling the dice with a timing belt, especially if the motor is interference type. Yikes!!! Just, I mean just got a call from the ladies mom, said that her daughter loss power steering and alternator in the car on the way to work this morning. Phew, glad it was that belt (assuming) instead of the timing belt. |
Well, opened the hood to see a lot of white furr all over the place. Yes there was a cat still in there, tossed the belt. Yuk!!!

You should have found the engine code of the Options sticker if you don't have the service schedule the other half of that sticker will be near the spare wheel well.
If you followed a video of YouTube depending who made the vid it can be risky, can you post the link? |
Ooops, thought I did post that link. Here it is:
He said the motor was NOT interference, but I was told it is. |
