timing bel

My fiance has a 2001 beetle with 2.0 motor in it with 99,000 miles on it and the dealer raised the concern that the timnig belt is a chronic problem in the cars at this milaege and that it should be replaced. I nkw that timing belts give no warning before failure and that if they break at speeds of about 15 or faster severe valve damage can can ccurr but how pertinent is it that the belt be changed now versus when the manual says to change it? Thanks, Mike.

Actually there is no certain measure of miles wherein you have to change the Volkswagen timing belt... It just that if you've check it is already worn out or loose enough better replace it before it can do some damages in your engine...

Ok, gotcha. Is there an easier way other then removing all that must be in order to remove the timing belt cover to check the belt for wear? If not, how difficult is it to change? Thanks.
