super beetle fuel filler pipe and new rubber seal installation

I am semi-restoring a 73 super beetle and for the stripped body paint job I removed the fuel filler pipe and old rubber seal. Now - having terrible time getting it back through the hole with the new seal. Anyone have a trick or method? Grease? Vaseline? tried dish soap no go.
