problems with rear deck lid on 69 beetle
 

hey all-
am looking for some guidance re-attaching a rear deck lid to my '69 beetle. have it loosely bolted up and am confident that i can adjust it to fit with no gaps and smooth open and close action. my problem is i can't for the life of me remember how the spring attaches. if you look at the attached pic, i believe that the spring hangs loose in the notch in the post coming out of the car and the other end is pinched and inserted into the bracket on the deck lid. but i just can't figure out the mechanics of it to get it to work properly.
if someone has a similar car that can post a pic that i could use for reference would be most helpful. even if someone wants to try to explain it to me in lameman's terms would helpful as well. thanx in advance-
