Oil Change Questions

I have recently bought a 2000 Turbo Beetle and love it but when I gave it its first oil change it brought up some questions.
1. Is there and easier way to change the oil filter? You have to snake your way through the radiator hose and then get oil every where.
2. Are you suppose to use synthetic oil? What brand do you recommend?
3. What oil filter do you recommend? What is the cost?

Hi Turbo, I do not have a Bug but do have a turbo car.

1. I have no idea about filter access. If you didn't see an easier route, you likely have it. Funny shaped cars have design issues somewhere or another.

2. I do use synthetic. Regular dyno oil is fine but synthetic is suppose to be better, especially for turbo's. I use full synthetic and do change the oil every 5,000 miles, as the manual suggests. Some people let changes go longer when they use synthetic, I do not.

3. I use OEM filters. Being a German car, getting OEM filters would likely be best. There may be a supply company that has found the OEM supplier and sell their brand/label. I believe Volvo's is Mann. I can purchase a OEM filter from the stealer for $11 or get them from www.FCPEuro.com for $4.50 each. I try to get them when I order other parts or get them 10 at a time. I'll go through 6 per year, heck, I put 2,500 miles on my car in the past 2 weeks.

Hope that helps.
