We just bought a used 2001 Beetle for my daughter.. It has an automatic transmission.. Sometimes when shifting into reverse the transmission will not engage. If you shift back into drive a couple of times it will finally engage. Anyone else have this problem and know of a fix?

First do the obvious and have the fluid level checked. It is a closed system so you cannot check it from the top, it has to be on a hoist and checked from the bottom. Then check the cable linkage to the shift selector on the top of the transmission to see if it is working properly.
