Default Mod: Catalytic converter in 1972 VW?? Is it possible?

One car guy told me there's no reason to put a cat on an carburette vw squareback and couldn't understand why i'd want to do it. He also said there'd be too much backpressure and the thing wouldn't run or wouldn't run acceptably.

Is this true? What if I put two Catalytic converters in parralel (or one on one exhaust port) ? Would that mostly take care of the excessive back pressure?

I'd really really like to Mod my 1972 VW Squareback so that it runs nice and clean in the city (don't like stinky cars), even if I sacrifice a little bit of performance (which I don't care about as a slow driver).

Thanks for any input, ideas, experiences with these old boxer VW engines.
