I gave my wife a convertible turbo beetle the first year they were out. The issue is the top breaks
over and over again. Twice a year... under warranty.. a $4000 fix. Well, the warranty expired
and the fricken top just broke again.

Am I doomed? Is there a fix? Is there something to do?

We are tempted to just trade it in on a non-convertible.. or walk away from the whole VW Bug scene

does your state have lemon law protoections? i remember hearing something about making dealer fix ongoing problems even after warranty
