RE: filters
1973 beetle didn't have a tube going to the oil cooler.
The air filter just sits on top of the carb, and it will have it's own way to be fastened, it has one tube about 1/2 in dia. going to a little hot air scoop close to the muffler, a small hole in the rear engine pan will be where the tube fastens to the air scoop. if it doesn't have this any more then plug the one hole on the air filter. This is a cut and dry mount, even a cave man could do it. On some models the air filterhousing had two small preheat tubes, they both hook up the same as above but have twoholes instead of one. The small preheat tubes carried hot air to the carb, but didn't work. However we still installed the tubes for looks and to keep the owners from asking questions. |
RE: filters
ok so i got the air filter but i got told that a breather tube connected to it from where you put the oil in to the filter do i need this tube

RE: filters
Yep sure do, it slides on a tube next to the oil filler cap,
then to the filter if it has a place for it. If it doesn't you need to look for one that does, That is the crank case breather, without the tube connected it will blow oil in a lite mist around the engine, Hooked to the filter the crank case fumes are sent down the carb and burned. That picture you posted is like the little chrome jobs we use to use way back when. they do work some what, but they seem to dirty up the small filter ring a little fast. so you might want to find where you can get replacements. |
RE: filters
the place wher the tube would go was plued with a plastic piece what does the tube i nee look like
|
RE: filters
It's nothing but a piece of tube, looks like a heater hose but smaller, and about a foot long. It should slip on a nipple
sitcking up at the oil filler cap, and slip on a nipple on the air filter. It also has to be made of a material that oil will not soften. Usually any type auto hose for the engine should work. |
