Default A/C, fan, heater lost power - need advice

My A/C, fan, and heater completely stopped working. No power. I checked the fuses and they're fine. A mechanic says the problem lies in the interior switch controls having gone bad and must be replaced. He recommended replacing the "head unit"? Not sure what this part is - I always think of the head unit as the parts controlling the radio/CD player. Does this sound possible? Can I buy this part from a parts dealer? Mechanic quoted price of $280 for replacement "Head unit". Any suggestions on possible fixes are greatly appreciated.

Did you solve this problem? I am trying to fix the same problem and would be interested if there is a fix I can do.

Doesn't sound right to me. Do the lights still come on on the controls? I'd think it was the blower motor if they do. What year is your car?

One possibility I just learned about on my 1995 Golf that could cause potential problems similar to yours. The ground/earth connections to the engine were rusted on the engine block. A mechanic explained that this is a problem for VW's because poor grounding impacts the central processing unit behavior. You might try to clean up your ground connections to see if it resolves any of these problems.
