Default any advice about my 72 beetle?

hey everyone,
i was given a 1972 beetle that had been sitting for aprox 12 years becuase of engian issues. i put a new coil on it and it fired right up. the car its self has 19k and the rebuild 1970 engian has under 500miles. iv only run it probably 2 hours worth sence i have had it (sence before the snow fell last winter) and with it running in nuetral, you mash the peddle to the floor (just long enough to bring the rpms to about half way to what ever you want to call redline, it will hasitate and back fire (shoots small bursts of flame) before rpms increase. the oil is overfilled (one thing i replaced when i got the car) and smells of gas. iv installed new sparkplugs, wires and deleted the evap (rotted away). also i have rebuilt the carb. i had no "clear" form of directions for setting the carb so i did it the best i could. my question is: is the gas in the oil and the firery backfires caused becuase its running too ritch? can anyone tell me how to set the carb with excamples of what you have (screw one so many turns, screw two so many turns ect)? im 90% sure it has a PICT 30/31? maybe a 30/34? i KNOW the first number is 30
