i have a 1999 beetle with 100,000 miles. it has gone through two condensers. like everything with the new beetle, not easy to work on and not cheap. i had to have mechanic do it. over $1000 both times. good luck.

The condenser is not an easy fix. The splash shield has to be removed from the bottom then both front fenders and front bumper assemblyhave to be removed just to get to it. Almost always the receiver-drier has to be replaced due to contamination and the refigerant removed. You would need a vacuum pump, manifold guage setand all the related special tools for the job. The core doesn't cost much, it is the labor involved that costs so much.
