I have a 99 Beetle and the transmission will not shift into any gear except 5th. When it first happened it shifted into reverse and 5th and now rev is gone. I read some other forums here and saw of others having similar issues and it went back to replacing the shift link carrier. I removed the old carrier and it was broken where it bolts on, so i thought that was the problem and replaced it. I still have the same problem only 5th gear will engage. Please Help

 

So last weekend I removed all the cable and the counterweight (just calling it that because i don't know the correct term) and found the part that that counterweight bolts to was stripped. The shaft that goes into the trans is splined on the top so if you take off the reverse light indicator the part directly under that is also splined. The splines where gone inside that part so i replaced it and all is good. If anyone has a parts breakdown and wants more info i would be glad to help

 

Sorry bit specific parts aren't that easy to find even with ETKA. Can you post more details like engine code or a picture maybe?
