'73 Beetle ???????????
I found a 73 beetle I am thinking of purchasing. Did they have a regular beetle and a super beetle this year and which one do I want? What was the main difference between the two? The reason I ask is my dad says I do not want a super beetle. Can anyone help me?
supper has strut style front end they do have more problems
front end shimmy some times expencive to fix
standerd beetle has flat dash and windshield that is the easy way to tell them apart

Super Beetles were made from '71 to '79 and the standard Beetle was made till '77 I believe.
'73-'79 Supper Beetles have a curved front windshield, bigger dash, and a slightly different body style from the standard beetles. The '71-'72 Super beetles had the flat windshield and flat dashboard like the Standard Beetles. Super Beetles used a McPherson suspension setup vice the torsion bar that the standard Beetle used. The spare tire in the Super Beetle lays flat in the trunk and the standard Beetle sits up at an angle. And the standard beetle had no louvers on the rear deck lid.
That should outline the major noticeable differences between the two models. There of course are various seat differences as well but that was also a year to year changes apparent and some small interior things as well but what I listed are the major ones that will tip you off as to what you're looking at.

"There was a time that you could choose to not drive a Super Beetle...now you must take what you can get."
The point here is that even though the Standard Beetle is the preferred model all of the aircooled VWs are getting hard to find. If you don't have another prospect car I would recommend getting the seller to a price under the value of the car so that you can easily sell the car without taking a hit and buy a Standard Beetle if one comes up.
Stay away from the "auto-stick" transmission!!!
