2000 Beetle 1.8 turbo Starter problems

I was told by my local shop that i need a new starter , they said it would be 400 dollars , that seems high to me , is this thing that hard to change, most starters are two bolts and out, can i have some feed back on this please .

Welcome to the forum. Attachment 3307

Yes they will be held on with 2 bolts. $400 does seem a bit expensive haven't you tried Attachment 3308?

Ok I got a starter and put it in myself, 114 dollars for the starter, but it sounds horrible, took it back out and the teeth on the starter are all tore up, before anyone replies, it was installed correctly, I'm guessing the rebuilt starter was bad .

You will have to be careful that the teeth on the flywheel ring gear aren't torn up as well?

yes thanks I turned the flywheel around several times checking teeth all looks good, went and got another new rebuilt starter and this one is a good one , all done and back on the road.
