Default 1972 Super Vert wont run

My girlfriend has a 1972 superbeetle convertable that has stopped running. It was running but while dirving I heard a pop in the stearing column and it stopped running. I bought a new ignition switch, put it in and it ran for 3 minutes before doing the same thing. What is going on? Does anyone know what this problem is? None of the wires are touching metal. The key will turn it over but it does not get power. If I run a wire from hot to the coil it runs but the ignition alone will not give it the electrical power it needs.

Any help is appreciated.

Mike
