Default 1965 Bug seems to be hesitating when I accelerate...

So I just inherited a 1965 beetle. It's got 66k miles on it, in pretty good condition. It had been sitting for the last 4-6 months. Took a couple minutes to get it started. Now it runs great. Idles very smooth, no mis-firing. Only problem is when I go to accelerate it lags or hesitates. The colder the engine is, the more it does it. It seems to be choking. To describe it, its like if the car were singing and took in a large breath of air, but as the sound and air came out, there was a tickle in its throat and it would cough. Kind of a weird analogy but I don't quite have all my mechanical terms straight. I don't know what the symptoms are if it is running too rich or too lean. It has fresh gas in it, but I haven't cleaned the carb out since I started driving it.

My father took very good care of it mechanically until he passed away. Now I hope to be able to do the same. The choking can't be healthy for it, so any advice is much appreciated. Thanks!

Jed
