1.8T tranny removal

Hi,

I have a 2001 Beetle with 150,000 miles on it. It needs the clutch replaced.

My issue...how to get the transmission out? I have everything disconnected that I can tell. Tranny moves about an inch back, then stops. I cannot see anything that is blocking the tranny from sliding fully back so I can lower it.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Transmission removal on mk4 VW Jetta TDI , also Golf and New Beetle TDI

Thanks Keithuk! That did help, but I must say, whoever designed the setup should have to work on them AFTER assembly. I ended up removing the left side CV axle, and the transmission still got hung up on the sway bar and power steering lines at the steering rack.

Now, I need to find a new clutch inspection cover. I mangled the old one.

The clutch was is very sad shape. No friction material at all. The flywheel and pressure plate are in very poor condition as well. I have a new set up on order.

What is the difference between the ALH and the AWV 1.8 liters?

I found a solid flywheel clutch kit made by Sachs. I will order this one. $300 at Rock Auto.

The ALH is a 1.9 TDI diesel engine and the AWV is a 1.8 Turbo petrol engine. Whether the flywheels and clutches are the same I couldn't tell without searching ETKA.

Sorry, I meant difference between the 1.8 APH and 1.8 AWV. The clutch and flywheel kits have the same numbers.

I don't have any info on the 1.8 APH have you tried Google?

Thanks for that Info!!! I'm still trying to find the Chassis number based on the VIN. So far, no luck...

Keithuk 10-02-2012 03:05 PM

The Chassis number is the VIN number you should find all the details on the Options sticker.

rrgrassi 10-02-2012 07:02 PM

I have no idea where the options sticker is. I bought this car last month to fix up and give to my daughter. None of the online VIN decoders gave me a chassis number. I wish VW does like MB. Like W123, or W126. Those are good chassis numbers.
