Default rear brake swap

i have a 1998 golf with rear drum brakes and would very much like to replace them with disc brakes. I looked but I do not know where to start with a swap, it does not appear to me that I can just pull the drums and put on the discs, but correct me if I am wrong. Thanks

Also, the guy who i bought the car from has "upgraded" the front brakes to cross drilled front rotors, but they are two different rotors! they both are the same size, but they have different drill patterns, and looking at the pads, I think one might have been braking more than the other, but I am not sure, it is hard to tell. Does anyone know if this is a problem, and if it is, where could I get some new rotors?
