I recently traveled to Argentina and rented a GOL. I lost the key and the rentel comapny is asking $300 US dollars to replace the key. He says the cost is so high because there is a chip in the key. This was a basic model GOL with no remote unlock for the doors and a basic key. Am I being duped?

 

A golf? And even in the basic key there still is a chip in it so yeah there telling the truth. $300 sounds pretty ridiculas though.

 

What Gol?

This Gol AB9 since 2005 have a kind of code (I don't know if it's a chip) that's recognized in the ignition. They call it electronic imobilizator. Without a key with the code you can't turn on the car. And this key is very expensive in Brazil. I don't know how much it cost in Argentina.

O sorry my bad i didnt notice. I have never seen a picture of a Gol before, they looked cramped but probably do good on MPG

I opened the key of my Gol and i saw it. It realy exists since 1999 at least.
