VW Parts necessary?

It is time for me to do the 40K mile service on my 2009 Jetta Diesel. The local dealership wants $500-600 for the servicing which I cannot afford at this time. I have a friend who is an excellent mechanic, but normally services English and Italian cars. He told me to get the parts and fluids and he would do the work, based on what needs to be done according to the owner's manual. My question is this. Is is necessary to get VW filters or can I get after market filters from the local auto parts store? The oil, transmission filter and fuel filter run $27-36 dollars! I mean $27 for an oil filter! Also VW told me I should use their fluids because they are mineral based! Is there anything wrong with using a high quality generic, well know transmission fluid or should I buy the one from VW? Same for brake or power steering, and the diesel additive I need to prime the fuel filter?
Any information that can be provided by forum members will be greatly appreciated.

I think that they use cartridge filters now so they are more expensive than traditional filters. It sounds like a lot but worth the money down the road when the car still is running well. used volkswagen gti beaverton oregon 6 speed
