Hello,,I am trying to get some info on the early VW beetle engine specifications,, specifically pistons. I am trying to restore an older 1980 Cushman Truckster for my GF. I am an old fogie at 75 years and have been a shade tree mechanic for many years and still learning as we get along with life,,,,,LOL. I bought this Cushman that had been parked along a fence line for a few years,,,according to the PO,,,,LOL. I got it home and was able to get it started and engine ran good but had a good amount of Blow-By, so I decided to put new rings and possibly rod bearings.
It was at this point that I found of the absolute lack of available repair parts for the OMC 2 cylinder horizontal opossed engine that is very similar to the early VW's.. The OMC engine uses 3.500 bore size pistons and I was overjoyed when informed that the early Beetles also used the same 3.500 bore,,,!! ALAS,,the Oreillys and Autozons of our world have no way to call up info on these early VW pistons and I was told to explore the internet forums for more current info,,SO,,here I am.
Upon the teardown, I find one of the OMC pistons has a chunk of piston skirt broke off and impossible to locate a replacement piston for the OMC
Does anyone here know if there is a "Library" that has the ring land sizes and the wrist pin info on the early VW Beetle, pistons,?? IF at all possible I would like to use two of the Beetle pistons in her Cushman.
Many THanks for any help,,,and Wish Me Luck,,,!!!
