new here: about to look at our 1st Beetle; tips?

I'll check forum resources in a moment, however, my wife just found an ad for a 1963 Beetle and we're going tomorrow to look at it. I've been around a lot of older Volvos, GM, etc., and have driven a couple Beetles, (which I liked), but never owned or maintained one.

Seller admits to one rusty spot in pan under driver's feet and a little bubbling under paint near one fender. Repaint was by original owner. Car lives in hot, dry climate. Black paint looks good in photos. Car has extra little chrome enhancements like headlight eyebrows.

The deal: $4,500 OBO. 1963. Third owner; decent black paint. No info on mileage yet, but figure that a lot of miles have gone by so not sure that matters. "Single port 1500," engine. Dealer installed gas heater, (fellow says it blows air, but has been afraid to try it). Seller fiddles with a lot of VW's. Cute in photos, but we won't know much until we try it.

I'll check for trans popping out of gear; floor pan condition, (rust?), how tight tight handling is, smoking, etc. Any tips for this model year would be appreciated.

I have NO idea if this is a fair price for a good VW.

Thanks, nice to be here,
Dennis
