Just bought a 1984 VW Rabbit GTI
Hey guys my name is Michael andI'm new to this forum! I just bought a 1984 VW Rabbit GTI and I don't know too much about them considering I'm a BIG FORD owner. I have a 1988 Ford Mustang LX police intercepter,a 2001 Ford Ranger, and a 2004 Freestar.
The rabbit that I bought has front and rear sway bars,H&R springs, and Bilstein shocks. The person I bought it from said that it's leaking alot of oil from the valve cover gasket and I would just like to know if that is a normal thing or not. I really heard alot of good things about these VW's and I'm hoping you kind people can tell me more about them! Thanxs

RE: Just bought a 1984 VW Rabbit GTI
Hea mike, im kind of new to this sight too but i know your car!!! sweet!!! is it carburated or fule inject? those little 1.8 really move if you do a few things to them. A leeky valve cover gasket in my oppinion could mean one of three things, #1- it may just need to be replaced pending on how many miles it has on it. #2 someone may have tried to replace it and torqued the valve cover back on too tight deforming the gasket itself and #3 someone beat that car up and warpped the head witch is not an uncommon problem with those little pocket rockets (aluminum heads and and alot of heat dont mix in a little car). This is just speculation on my part but i have seen quite a few of those 8 Valves and its usualy right around 120-140000 that people start getting rid of them without telling the new owner they use tp pull 7000RPM whole shots every day! You can pull the valve cover off and put a straight edge across the head to check it. A valve cover gasket is really a cheep part for that car so you may luck out. Cool car man!!! I have an 87 16V Scirocco that im trying to sell but you just made me feel the love for the old ones again and now i just dont want to sell it. At one time my Scirocco could hang with your interceptor To be honest i might have given you a run for your money! Have fun Mike and a WISE choice of V.W's to buy there is a hudge cult following for the old Quick ones! Todd

Thanxs for the compliments Todd I appreciate it! Yes my( I assume your talking about my intercepter) stang is fuel injected and it has alot of modifications on it. Even though the motor is basically stock it is still"crazy" fast.
I'm glad that I got the rabbit but I have alot of work to do on it. It needs a tune up and it needs an entire interior because it was all pulled out. It also needs a front and rear bumper because in Wisconsin it is illegal to drive a car without them and they were both taken off.I have no radioand I don't see any wiring for one either so I'll have to wire my own in. That and alot of othernumerous thingsto do to it but thatsok--That is how I will learn about this car. When it stops raining /snowing I will post some pics.
