Introduction of Jim T
I guess I didn't completely read the "Rules and Regulations," and missed the part at the bottom about introducing myself as my 1st post. So, here it is as my 2nd post, haha.
I spend about half my time in Baja California, Mexico. One of my friends here in San Vicente has an '87 Vanagon, which he's having some problems with, So I've been helping him with it a bit. I'm a pretty good mechanic, but I don't know much about the computerized systems of modern cars. So, I'm hoping Volkswagon Forums can lend a helping hand. Another mechanic friend of mine here has a scanner, so that should help.
Off-road VW's are pretty popular here. I've got another friend in San Quintin who is a mechanic specializing in VWs. He's built and raced a few of them, both buggies and Baja bugs. (Baja bugs are called "Bochos" here). I've attached a photo of me standing next to one at a race in San Antonio del Mar, about 70 miles south of Ensenada.

Welcome to the forum.
What's the engine code of your Vanagon as ETKA doesn't show that model?
Please tell us your car spec in your signature

I looked all over the car, on the non-carpeted floor, and the door sills, and couldn't find the sticker that shows all the specs, including the engine code. The ID plate in the driver's door sill says it was built in August of '87, but the title says '88, so maybe it's an '88. I have the engine serial # if that will help any. Thanks.
