clicking sound
hi
we just bought a new 2006 VW Jetta 2.5 SE Auto. after we bought it home from the dealer and switched off the engine and got out of the car we noticed loud clicking sounds from under the car. we had not heard those sounds at the dealership after we test drove. the reason for this is because its right off a freeway and very noisy there. we thought we'd give it a few days but it continued so we took it to the dealer. he says that it is the contractions of the metal of the exhaust pipe because its cooling down which is making that noise and that it is a common occurence in all cars and nothing can be done about it. I have a Nissan and they'd loaned me a Passat and both these cars never so much as whispered. I havent noticed this occurence in any other cars around or those of people we know.
can anybody advise what to do next?
thanks

hi Jeff
thanks so much for your reply. u know this small irritant has been stopping us from enjoying our Jetta to the max. i think you can describe the sounds as not random, in the sense that as soon as you turn the engine off and get out of the car u can hear the sounds...they kinda go click..pause..click..pause..click..and it goes on for pretty long eg. i can hear it even after i am back after one hour in the gym !
i do hope its the common sound and not something uncommon.....cos the service guys didnt even take it on the shop floor to check it out...they just heard my description and stuck their head under the car and said this is it! :-)
thanks again !!

hmmm.....yea dealers suck most of the time.
It usually is the metal...see it's hard to offer an opinion as it's the first time I've come across this...without being able to look at the car or hear the noise it's hard to really say from my experience. I guess, try a friend who knows a mechanic well and see if they can perhaps diagnose the problem, or go to a smaller shop but don't accept any repairs till you get 2 or 3 opinions from different mechanics/shops, unless you know them or a friend knows them well enough.
I hope you figure it out! Keep us posted!

Yup, a lot of cars have their own character, talk to your car, love your car, you'll soon be able to have a mutual and understanding relationship in which both of you will have many future and most enjoyable driving experiences together.
