Blown 1.8t?

Timing belt went on my 2000 Golf, 139,000 miles. The shop has had it for over a month. I was going to get a new head for $2500. Now they say there is metal in the oil filter and the bottom will go. I was told I need a new motor for 3900 to 4200 or get rid of the car(and I just put all new tires on it). I owe $3000 still on the car. Any thoughts on how I should proceed?

Well timing belts should be changed before the specified time then we don't get the complaints the bleeding timing belts broke and I need a cylinder head. At 140k its coming up to its 2nd timing belt change and tensioner but if the tensioner, guide roller or water pump has broken then its failed early.

In your case is it a petrol or diesel engine?

They have obviously drained the oil and found the metal particles. Without an analysis these could be anything. I would see if you can drop on another engine at a breakers so they can fit that.

It is a petrol engine. I love this car. I would spend more replacing the car than the motor. I just want to make sure it's worth it and these guys are right. My second opinion mechanic is going to call me Monday.

Your in catch 22 if you still owe $3000 on a 2000 Golf you either fix it or scrap it and loose $3000 the decision is yours.
