cam and chip. they are inexpensive and good for around 20 hp on the 2.0 (at least the mk3's that is)

go magnaflow for a dead, crisp, NONE RICE sound with 2.25-2.5 piping. i would get a full catback exhaust, they got for around 4 grand with a muffler, resonator, and new mandrel bend pipe, and they bolt right on, very easy.

as for intake, iv always gone k&n on EVERYTHING but iv seen a lot of vw guys run injen cold air intakes...bbr makes good pipe too...intake and catback exhaust at your local performance shop should be like 6-7 hundred bucks but it is WELL worth it, even with the automatic holding you back...

i would also look into a decent cam and chip if iy where my car

6 or 7 hundo????? you could get an intake cat back exhaust cam and a chip for under 600 easy. tt cat back is like 300 autotech 268 cam 100 nuespeed p-chip 100 and for an intake just swiss cheese your air box and put a k&n panel filter in. 50 max. grand total of $550 and an easy 30+ hp

all depends on brand, styling, and quality. for example...he could easily just hack his airbox to peices but the gain will not be neer what he would get my using a nice 3 inch smooth intake tube, k&n or other cone filter, and cold air airbox...same goes with exhaust and ext.

you don't hack your air box. there is a specail way to do it. and it works just the same.. (as testedagainst a nuespeed p-flo)and a cat back exhaust does nothing except make noise.
