Default Shifting in my Jetta

Hi there. I have a '96 Jetta with about 160,000 miles on it. Over the past month or two, I've noticed a change in the way the stick-shift feels when I'm shifting. It doesn't feel as tight as it used to when I shift from gear to gear. It feels like there is more "space" when I'm shifting. It still drives fine, though, and there haven't been any problems other than it just feeling different. Does anyone have any idea what this could be? Should I bring it in to a mechanic? (I know next to nothing about cars and worry about being taken advantage of if nothing major is wrong...) Thanks for any advice.
