PLEASE HELP: Volkswagen Touran Alternator Pulley
1 Attachment(s)
Hello Everyone,
My Touran went bang today while I was at work. Misses was driving in town and the squealing on the fan belt from about 2 days previous went bang and stopeed. She got it home with the battery warning light on but waited for me to finish work. I've had a look in the engine bay and as I thought, the bang was the fan belt coming off. It is still intact but has come off the pulleys. I am fine about replacing the fan belt just incase any none obvious damage had occured o it BUT. On further looking I noticed that the pulley for the Alternator was squewed. I pulled it off the alternator spinde and the bearing between the alternator spindle and pulley is disintegrated. Alternaotr looks undamaged and still spins fine but need a new pulley. Finding it hard to find a general price for the part and fitting. Does anyone have a rough ida before I get ripped off by a backstreet dealer as I think Volkswaen may charge a lot to come out to the car and raid my wallet before the littluns first christmas. Please help Keith Brittain |

Touran Alternator - Could this be a fault
Hi,
Similar thing has happened to me. Driving back .. lots of rattling than 'pop'. Checked and seen the belt was off , but so was the pulley attached to the alternator. Recovery people tell me that the whole alternator will need changing as these come in one unit (i.e. Alternator and Pulley). Will Ring up VW Monday to find out how much this is likely to cost. Did any of you chaps get this sorted? RT |
Got it sorted. Get a second opinion as I didn't need a new Alternator just the pulley. The pulley bearings had collapsed and no damage was done to the Alternator (in my circumstance anyway). Got a local independent garage to do the work, All in £150 for parts and labour, you could probably get it cheaper but I was desperate to get it sorted. Looked on line for prices of pulleys - about £60.
Hope this helps. Cy |
Thanks for the info. I've got a couple of quotes for both jobs... to replace Alternator £430 by dealers and £330 by VW authorized repairers. Job will be £160 or £132 respectively if its just the pulley.
If I can get the car to the Authorized repairers will get it done there. How is the car now they have just put the Pulley on? Also, was the car making a growling/rattling noise just before it came away? RT |
Further Update, got this done for £145 (plus £30 for Brake fluid change) as prices were more competitive than the dealer. As you say, a second opinion was worth having and thankfully the mechanics were able to rehabilitate the alternator to accept another pulley as opposed to getting a new alternator (which would have been over £300). So I think £145 was a good price all in all.
