need help with my 89 golf

just got a 89 golf for free. it cranks over has spark to atleast one cylinder i tested but will not fire. i hear the fuel pump come on too. i sprayed stating fluid in the intake tube still wont even sputter, so im thinking i should be getting starting fluid(fuel) plus spark to one cylinder i tested and why is it not even sputtering? the dizzy is suspect as u can turn it without loosening the screw. the base stays put but the cap turns, its weird. i know alot about cars, enough to usually run when some one says vw, but shes mine so i will make her run no matter what. i need good gas milage:P
tired of my mustang and firebird raping me at the gas pump:p
i also see this car has some kinda factory alarm?????
i know the last owner. he was driving it and it just died on him and he couldnt get it to ever start again. im going to the bone yard tomorrow for a starter as i think it got toasted tryn to start it so much, a new dizzy if theres one and a battery and a ecu if i can find one. its a auto too, what kinda gas milage do these get??

You might look at the timing belt (cam belt) before
going too far with the goodie replacement.
