Knocking/ ratteling noise from engine

my passat 1.8t 01' is making this knocking/ ratteling noise coming from the engine. My normal, all i can do is change your oil mechanic, doesnt have a clue what the preoblem is. He thinks it may be the timing belt.. i am drowning in bills to fix my car.. Anyone have any idea what this might be? Any advice is welcome.. thanks people...

Is the check engine light on, does it do it while you're parked, need details to diagnose the problem. If the noise happens while driving, and when accelerating, maybe rod knock. Gotta be more precise bro...

do you notice loss of power?
i get a slight tapping sometimes when the car has been on for a little while and settles down to an idle, sounds like a lifter knocking, just a lot less loud and hard. just a very light tap, yet noticable. i have been assured by VW mechanics and owners alike that its nothing to worry about, just a sound this motor makes sometimes, i had a jeep that made a similar noise and it was apparently the cam walking. once again something its "supposed" to do.
anywho, a little more detail may help.

I had a rattle coming from my 95 Golf, and it turned out that heat sheild over the cat had rusted its bolts and was only held up by the exhaust making the noise, check you shields.
