Help! Any ideas?

I drive a 1.6 Auto Golf, 11 years old. Over the past couple of months it has developed an intermittent problem. Upon starting the car and waiting a few seconds my car starts to shudder slightly and if I put it in drive it is like something is pulling it back as it is trying to move forward. When I push down on the accelerator it moves fine but when I come to a stop it shudders still. This happens for about 5 minutes and then is fine. As I said it is intermittant and may happen once every couple of weeks. My mechanic is mystified because it is always fine when I take it to him. The computer hasn't picked anything up. It only ever happens when I start the car in the mornings, never after it has already been started that day. When it happens it really does feel like their is an air lock in the fuel pipe running to the engine but I don't think that is possible. Has anyone experienced this problem before and had it diagnosed? I thought I would put on my 'inspector clusoe' hat being as my mechanic is baffled by it all!!!!

Thanks,Vanessa

Try changing your fuel filter if it hasn't been changed for a long time.

Cadillac converter loading up when cold, them clearing after warmup? Just a thought. Fuel pressure test at first start? Battery voltage dropping?
