DIY: car factory hid xenon headlight manual level adjuster
Here is a DIY for adding a manual adjuster to your factory HID's that will bypass the factory auto level feature (Careucar).
I personally don't like the auto system, especially since the default is to point straight at the ground when a sensor goes bad, pretty much making your headlights useless at night.
Things needed:
Potentiometer - preferably 5k ohms with a SPST switch
Wires
Wire connectors or solder - whichever you prefer
Phillips head screwdriver
First remove the passenger side kick panel.
Find the blue wire connector and unplug it.
Now there are two wires you need here. The black wire with the green stripe at pin #1 and the brown wire with the white stripe at pin #5.
Now there are two ways to do this. Either bypass the system completely or make it so the system still works in auto mode when the switch is in the off position. I chose to bypass it completely, but I will tell you both ways.
Splice into the black/green wire. Now you can cut it in half, or simply pull back some insulator. They will need to be reconnected if cut in half. Now solder or wire connect your wire to this wire, make sure you have enough wire to run to where you are installing your potentiometer, or run the wires before hand. Connect this wire on your potentiometer on terminal #3.
Now cut or splice the brown/white wire. Now here's the part about by passing the system. If you want the auto system to still work just splice the wire or reconnect if you cut it. If you want to bypass the system completely and just have manual control, only solder or wire connect to the part of the wire that is NOT connected to the wire connector anymore after cutting. Run this wire to terminal #2 on your potentiometer.
Now connect a wire to terminal #1 on your potentiometer and run the wire to a ground.
Now turn on your key and your headlights and if you did it right you should be able to manually adjust your headlights up and down. Clean up, make sure all wires are secure and covered and put your car back together.
I mounted my switch next to my stereo, wanted it easily accessible since my fiance' drives it sometimes. The added height adjustment makes a huge difference with the high beams on the back roads too.
