Demonic rev counter!!

Good day guys and girls,

Firstly whats up, this is my first post and sertainly not my last. I hope some one out there can help me as i have a slight dillema.

I drive a Golf 3 GTS (carburated 1800), it started doing the wierdest thing last week... As i drive or standing still, the rev gauge starts going ballastic all over the show without any sound from the engine, the engine is in idle and the revs are going demonic?? If i just leave it, the car eventully dies within a couple of seconds. If i rev her while she is doing this the rev needle goes haiwire for a bit and then calms down. There is no set time (When shes warm/cold, after i drove for 1/100km, when i start/ been driving for an hour, going slow/fast) when she starts to do this, what i can say is that if she is in gear, and im driving, the rev needle goes ballastic and then the car starts chocking, like she isnt getting fuel or air or some thing?? I drive for about 20k/m to work, now in this period she does it about twice. After she has done this for a couple of seconds and the car is still alive, she drives normally?? If she dies from this wierd rev needle behaviour, and i start her again, there is no problem, like it never happend?? Please any help would be appreciated in this regard...

So i hope some one can help me, even if they ask me more questions so that i can explain exactly what happens because it is very irretating and i dont know if something is going to brake if i keep on driving like this?? That is problebly my worst fear as i only get payed in like a weeks time so i want to know what i need to replace and can it hold till next week??

sounds like your spark coil might be going bad

RE: Demonic rev counter!!

take the wirefrom the coiloff the distributer and hold it near a ground point with a pair of insulated pliers (unless you want to get nocked on your as@) and have some one crank the engine you should be able to get a spark about a 1/2' long, if the car has multible coils just do the same test with each coil wire

could also be the rev counter shorting to ground (more likely now that i think of it)
