coolant temperature sensor

i have a 1998 2.0L jetta and i'm not a 100% sure if the coolant temperature sensor is the 4pin or 2pin sensor at the outlet hose elbow, does anyone know for sure which one is the coolant temperature sensor?

auto zone SW1429 is the correct sensor for the fans (three prong, square plug)
