Default can I put a VR6 into my 99 Jetta GL

So here's the deal. I'm in Afghanistan right now, but my girlfriend while driving my 1999 Jetta GL managed to hit a pot hole, trash the oil pan, and drove it home with "a funny noise". She got it towed to a shop by a friend who owns the toeing company so I trust the shops assessment. They said the engine is toast. KBB on the car is 2200-2500 in good condition, so I'm not willing to put $2200 into it just to make the car run. If I can put something better into it this is the time. Something that I can have fun with. I've only had this car for a little over a year, and I've never tweaked anything on a Jetta before. What can I put in there in place of the stock engine? If I went and found a VR6 would it fit? What would I have to change; wiring from engine to computer, computer, motor mounts, etc.? Any one have any words of wisdom for me please let me know.
