Beetle Key Questions
New to the world of VW Ownership. We just purchased a 2000 Beetle and It only came with a valet Key. Looking through the manual I see that this car also came with two master keys with remote door and trunk locks. Am I able to purchase these keys from a dealership? Will they be able to code them to this car? And the big question how expensive could this be?? Could we just put in after market remote door openers or would this effect the security system? Any feedback would greatly appreciated.
Thanks

im sorry bro, the same thing happend when i bought my jetta all i have is the vallet key, the dealership (in boulder colorado) wants $325 for the key and $125 for programing its almost not worth it to me unless i can find a place to do it for cheaper.
I have owned my 2000 New Beetle since 2001. I have a very good mechanic and do alot of work myself. We had a Automatic Starter installed back in 2002. My mechanic has a radio show on WJR in Detroit on Saturday mornings. His son was at the time working at a place called Tass Electronics which installs new radios and remote starters. They at first said," they could not do it," but Danny worked there had a friend working there also said, "Yes we can but it takes re-wiring the doors." He installed it on the side at the shop on a saturday afternoon after hours. It was around Xmas time so he did it for $200 plus the $150 for the remote. It took him about 4 hours and we had tochange the fuse in the box up 5 amps to 15 or 10cause it was blowing the instrument lights and doorlocks. As far as I know, I have the ONLY Beetle in Toledo with a remote starter. It can be done but you need the valet key you already have for a transponder box which is hidden somewhere under the dash. You are going to have to purchase a Key Fob from Volkswagen or best bet is EBAY. Volkswage charges about $75 for fob and $68 to program to car. Some outside shops know how to do it with the radio. I guess using the radio buttins and key in ignition you can program the car? It is inserted in the box, which has a switch similar to a ignition switch. Wires coming out go to the remote box telling it there is a key with a PC chip in the car trying to start the car. Volkswagen's starting system works this way.
1. Key remote fobor Valet key ( chip in plastic mounted on key) has to open the doors.
2. This action disables the factory alarm and theft protection.
3. Key has to be in the car and in the ignition.
3. Key has to be coded to car computer or car will not start and factory alarm will go off and car will not start and a code will appear and has to be rest before car will start with proper keys.
4. After car starts, system will enable auto door locks and let the shifter engage to put in gear.
My remote works this way. Car is sitting with doors locked and alarm set using remote supplied with remote.using the remote for car starter, press the start button till lights flash, opensdriver's door and car will start, it cannot re-lock doors. Volkswagen uses a reverse ground (open circuit is normal during monitoring system)on their alarm system. meaning a closed circuit signals an intrusion and the alarm goes off. their switches work in reverse. Thinking a switch is closed by looking at it, is actually reverse and open. All the remotes Dannysaid," are not set up this way, so the door locks had to be hard wires with new wires to the door remotes and locks.Thisentails taking apart the door panels and he had closer to 6 hours on the job. It works great! My wife just at times uses theremote to re-lock the doors upon starting but, You need to hit the brake to put it in gear which automatically shuts the car off when you start the car with the remote! Have had no problems except blowing the fuse the first few times. Just had to go up a few amps, no problem.
I have had other prices just for my own curiosity and found quote from $750 to $1000 for insatllation to being told IT CAN"T BE DONE! lotsof laughs when I show them! Volkswagen as far as I know doesn't offer one.It says," Our cars are fool proof, our cars need their own programed keys to start." They have to be towed away to steal. No stopping that! Good Luck and makes sure YOUR mechanic knows what HE IS DOING! Car PC can actually LOCK CAR down and has to be towed into Dealer to be reprogramed!
