Basic Tool Kit

I've always carried basic tools and maybe some critical parts that were specific to the vehicle. This doesn't mean a full set of tools but rather just some basic tools that can make the difference between riding home in your car verses riding home in a tow truck or taxi. For example, the old Chrysler products had a resistor in the ignition circuit that would disable the engine if it burned out. If that resistor failed and you had a spare, it was a 15 second fix that required no tools. That item could be the difference between walking and driving.
As vehicles have become very complicated, there are fewer roadside repairs that can be accomplished but a few tools can still be useful.

So looking for input here - What are the basic tools and maybe spare parts that you would consider to be useful for a VW TDI Passat?

It depends how much room you have in the boot, you could carry a toolbox with tools in.

I carry a tool roll with tools and extra bits needed. It straps on the side.
