Auto tranny leak . I NEED HELP!

My Daughter has a 2001 Cabrio with an Automatic transmission. Problem is that the tranny is starting to slip and when i lift the hood i see what looks like a cooler on top of the tranny and it's leaking bad threw some seals on top. Fluid looks kinda dark to be tranny fluid but i have no idea. My question, is it tranny fluid? Will the fluid leaking out cause tranny problems?
I read that tranny fluid needs to be done at a dealer... If i replace the seals, can i just add tranny fluid? I also read it may be a differential thing?
Basicly.... HELP!! Before the tranny blows
Thank You!!!

THIS FORUM SUCKS!!!! i just saw no one gets help to anything from anyone....

The fluid on the paper should be clean and transparent, without any metal filings or black flakes. New fluid usually comes red. Over the time and use it become more brownish, but it shouldn't be black.
Try to smell the fluid. It should not have a burnt smell.
All this may seem to be difficult for you, but when you check few similar cars, you'll be able to see the difference.

It could be the front seal. if you have an inspection plate take it off and see if transmission fluid is in it, if there is then the seal is leaking. you might luck out and it,s just the pan bolts need to be snugged up some.

You need to make sure you use the right type of transmission fluid in an automatic transmission. Some vws can use the dexron III others have to use the VW fluid. Check your owners manual. You also need to change the filters.

automatic transmissions do slip if the fluid level is low,the transmission oil will darken through excessive heat as it wont flow the oil cooler if the level is low.being a 2001 model you should be able to change the leaky seals and top up transmission with dextron 11 or if avaliable dextron 111.all the garages i have worked in use dextron 11.
